On the UN plane from Kabul just before I got home to Mazar. This is one of my favorite photos.
Hometown of Mazar-i-Sharif Over Narooz New Year’s there were 9,000 soldiers “protecting” the city, but really just created tension between three factions in the city. Luckily nothing exploded.

Camels carrying cooking fuel. Since fuel is limited, shrubs all over the country are being pulled up, leading to erosion and desertification

They would march the cows in a circle to stamp the wheat to get the seeds out.
Some of these donkey carts were pretty heavy duty.
Thousand Year Old Wall
They say the King at the time buried people in this wall.
These folks are the newly marginalized in this area after the Taliban got ousted

I quite like the old look to this photo of another camel train traveling a long way.

They had to quickly toss the young lambs onto the shore as they ended up getting washed all around us as we crossed the river.

This is the center of Mazar where Mohammed’s cousin Ali is buried. It’s a very impressive site
